Amash Advances Bill to Ensure Troop Pay

Measure Guarantees Troop Pay During Future Government Shutdowns

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) today sought to guarantee that active members of the Armed Forces would be paid their salaries and living expenses during any future government shutdowns. Amash signed a discharge petition for H.R. 1297, a bill that Amash cosponsored leading up to the threatened government shutdown in April.

“Our brave men and women in uniform should not be used as pawns in Washington political games,” said Amash. “Before any future shutdown, Congress must pass legislation to guarantee our troops are paid on time.”

The bill currently is pending before two committees. If a majority of House members sign a discharge petition, a bill must be considered on the House floor within one month. The continuing resolution that is funding government operations expires at the end of September. An agreement on another continuing resolution must be reached by the end of the month or the federal government faces a shutdown.

In addition to H.R. 1297, Amash has introduced his own bill, H.R. 1442, which uses a somewhat different mechanism to accomplish the same goal.
