Amash Announces Winners of Art Competition

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Rep. Justin Amash announced the winners of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition for Michigan’s Third District.

Elise Schierbeek’s piece, Legal Adult, was named the grand prize winner and will be on display in the Capitol for one year alongside winners from other congressional districts. Into the Ocean by Becca Heintz (Northview High School) and Greenhouse by Kevin Stefan (Kent Career Technical Center) were the Representative’s Choice winners and will be displayed for one year in Amash’s congressional offices.

Elise, a student at Rockford High School, will visit Washington, D.C., this summer for a reception honoring the winners. Pieces from Alicia Dills (East Grand Rapids High School), Nora Fitzgerald (Rockford High School), Lindsey Fortuna (Belding High School), Hannah Rothenbusch (Northview High School), Daniel Schumaker (Caledonia High School), and Emmylou Smith (East Grand Rapids High School) were named honorable mentions.

The Battle Creek Society of Artists, Calhoun County Arts Council, Grand Rapids Art Museum, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, Kent Intermediate School District, and Portland Community Arts Council served as sponsors and the judging committee. Amash’s office received 54 submissions for the contest. All entries were on display at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum where Amash announced the winners at a ceremony on Saturday.

The Congressional Institute sponsors the art competition in cooperation with the House of Representatives. The annual competition is open to high school students and the submissions may be in numerous media including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs. More than 650,000 high school students have participated in the competition since it began in 1982.

Copies of the grand prize and Representative’s Choice winning pieces are attached to this release.
