Amash Praises House Action on Pro-Life Bill

Legislation Cosponsored by Amash Would End All Taxpayer Funding for Abortion

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) praised the House’s action on H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which is scheduled to be voted on this afternoon. The bill aims to provide a comprehensive ban on federal funding for abortions.

“Using tax dollars to pay for the killing of innocent lives is unconscionable,” said Amash. “As a longtime supporter of this legislation, I am pleased that House leadership will bring the bill up for a vote, and I call on Senate leadership to do the same.”

Amash is an original cosponsor of H.R. 7, and he was an original cosponsor of the previous version of the bill in the last Congress.

The bill prohibits federal funds from being spent on abortions, health benefits plans that include abortion coverage, and federal health care facilities that perform abortions. This year’s bill was updated to include prohibitions on Obamacare exchange plans that offer abortion subsidies.

“I will continue to fight to protect the unborn,” said Amash. “Our country was founded on the ideal of individual liberty, and preserving that liberty must include preserving the right to be born.”

Amash has worked on several other bills to protect life during this Congress. He is an original cosponsor of H.R. 217, which cuts off certain funding to private entities that perform or fund abortions, and H.R. 1797, which bans abortions of unborn children 20 weeks old or older. Amash also is a cosponsor of H.R. 940, which protects the conscience of health care providers.
