Family of Third District Veteran Receives Honor for Wartime Service

Grand Rapids, Michigan – Rep. Justin Amash presented the Purple Heart Medal to the family of the late Private Martin J. Schuiling this morning at a ceremony at the Gerald R. Ford Federal Building. Private Schuiling’s son, Martin R. Schuiling, and grandson, Michael Warne, accepted the medal on behalf of the family.

Private Schuiling was an Army veteran of World War I. Schuiling sustained injuries while serving with the American Expeditionary Forces in France from February 18, 1918 to January 5, 1919. Schuiling participated in battle at Château-Thierry and Soissons.

While accepting the Purple Heart, Martin R. Schuiling, himself a World War II veteran, noted, “If you ever met my father, you never forgot him. He lived what he believed.”

“Mr. Schuiling’s courageous actions served the country he loved so deeply. It is an honor to present his family with this well-deserved award,” said Amash.
