Conservative groups give Amash top honors

Club for Growth, Heritage Action laud Amash for conservative votes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) received top honors from two conservative groups this week. Club for Growth named Amash a “Defender of Economic Freedom” for 2013, while Heritage Action gave Amash the top score in the Michigan delegation.

“I’ve made it my mission since the first day in office to defend the Constitution and advance individual liberty,” said Amash. “I’m honored that my work over the last three years has been recognized by every conservative group that tracks Congress.”

Amash was one of 22 representatives to receive Club for Growth’s annual Defender of Economic Freedom award. He is one of only two members currently serving in the House to have a lifetime score of 100 percent from the group. The award is given to congressmen who consistently vote for lower taxes, less spending, fewer regulations, and school choice, among other free market issues.

“Congress looks for any excuse to spend our tax dollars and grow government, but in 2013, the people of Michigan’s Third District had Justin Amash standing up for them in Washington,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “If we had more pro-economic growth fighters like Justin Amash serving in Congress today, America would be a better place.”

Heritage Action, affiliated with the conservative Heritage Foundation, this week released its 2013 review of congressional votes as well. For the third year in a row, Amash ranked as its top congressman in the Michigan delegation.

In every previous year as a congressman, Amash has won FreedomWorks’s “FreedomFighter” award and the National Taxpayers Union’s “Taxpayers’ Friend” award. Those organizations will announce their awards for 2013 later this year.
